I am a Lecturer in Medieval History in the School of History and Heritage. The principal focus of my research is the early and central medieval history of the Iberian Peninsula: particular areas of interest include social relations in the village world; questions regarding the social and economic agency of peasants; and the nature and workings of politics in the absence of robust governmental apparatus and institutions. The geographical focal points of my research are Atlantic Iberia and the Meseta, but I have also conducted research on other parts of Europe and I am indeed considerably influenced by comparative analysis.
From 2011 to 2014 I was a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow in History at the Faculty of History, University of Oxford and a JRF at St Hilda’s College, Oxford; during this period I undertook a comparative study of the nature of government and the consolidation of political power in early medieval Christian Spain and Anglo-Saxon England. From 2007 to 2011 I took my DPhil in History at Balliol College, Oxford. I completed my Masters in History at the Universidad de Santiago de Compostela, Spain, and my undergraduate degree in Modern History and Modern Languages at Oriel College, Oxford.
